Battle of the Strings - Louisville Concert Photography

Telegraph Visuals recently photographed the “Battle of the Strings” in Louisville. We were happy to partner with Danny Wimmer Presents, organizers of Louisville’s “Bourbon & Beyond” and “Louder Than Life” music festivals, to do some concert photography for them.

One of the great things about being a music and concert photographer in Louisville is being afforded behind-the-scenes access to some of the  best bluegrass that the commonwealth has to offer.  It’s always a treat to be hired to photograph musical artists in Louisville. Last night was no exception as we joined an enthusiastic crowd on the porch at The Fox Den in St. Matthews.

As is often the case, the stage lighting in small venues can be a challenge. However, our Canon mirrorless cameras handled the dark lighting like a champ. The music lovers in attendance were high energy and gave us multiple opportunities for some great crowd shots of fans dancing, cheering, and enjoying the music. Having access to the side of the stage also afforded as some views from a different angle than music concert-goers are normally used to. Seeking out clean backgrounds, good composition, and nice moments in our photos is one of the things that helps set your concert photos apart from the pack. As we learned in photo school at Western Kentucky University, a truly excellent photo contains three things: Light, composition, moment. This principle remains true whether you are a concert photographer, event photographer, or marketing photographer.

Photographing each of the two sets brought back good memories from the concerts and music festivals we’ve covered over the years. After the music concluded, the judges gathered in the parking lot outside to decide the winner of the battle. It was a close call, with lot’s of discussion back and forth about things like setlist selection, technical skill, stage presence, and chemistry with the audience.

Ultimately Louisville Bluegrass Band beat out the Lowland Ramblers from Owensboro to win the battle. Congrats and thanks to both bands for the excellent tunes.
